Today I saw something new and exciting. A California Quail walked through my yard, and he came just a few feet from my window perch while looking for food in the bushes. It was fun to watch his built-in feather toy wiggle atop his head as he walked around. Mom thought maybe she could put a little bird seed or a shallow tray of water to attract him and his family back to the yard so I can watch them some more.

That is a very cool looking bird! We love bird watching, and I think our Ruffed Grouse might be in the same family as your Quail. They are fun to watch too, and this time of year they are down in the woods drumming their wings as part of their mating ritual. We can hear the vibrations whenever we’re out in the yard. It’s a great sign of spring!

How great that you got to see the quail, they are in full swing here right now and we love watching and listening to them, the babies should be out soon, they are so precious.

  16. Oh wow, a built-in feather toy! Good thing you are an indoor cat, or that bird would be in for a workout! ;P

OMC, I love that bird’s little hat! We have quail here up in the foothills but only my mom has seen them.
