Seven years ago, on December 5, 2008 I chose my mom to be my new forever person. I’m not sure if we’ve told you my adoption story so here it is.
After the last of their first 3 kitties passed away, Mom & Dad were planning to wait a while before getting another cat. They had a 16 year old Golden Retriever who needed a stress-free home during his senior years, and they wanted to give Dad a break from having kitties in the house to see if it made any difference to his health (he is allergic to cats and gets shots for that). They donated most of the cat toys, beds and perches to a local animal shelter and went about their lives.
Well, that lasted for exactly 33 days! Mom decided the house needed more life and they decided to visit the local SPCA. They entered the adoptable cats’ living room at the SPCA to look at a scroungy-looking cat Mom saw online. As she was trying to get that cat to take interest in her, I came down from my hiding spot on the tallest perch and tried to crawl into her purse that was sitting on the floor. My soon-to-be Mom started laughing because I was a lot bigger than her purse, but I was determined to get into it, hoping I could sneak home with her.
My soon-to-be Mom set me on her lap, where I quickly curled up, purred, buried my head, and settled in for a nap. I made it clear that I had chosen her and I would be the next member of the Indulged Furries’ home. I could tell when they entered the kitty room that she and my new Dad would give me the quiet home that I needed.
Mom & Dad took me home, along with my new sister Sammi, who was choosing Dad while I chose Mom. Sammi was 10 years old so she kept her name. But I was given my new name, Raven, because of my beautiful black, feathery fur.
We all got along really well and our Golden Retriever brother Bentley liked having us kitties around in his last year to keep him entertained. Sammi didn’t let Bentley get too close, but I liked the big guy and I’d rub up on him and let him get close to me. Not only did I like the dog, but never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined getting such a wonderful home.
Fast forward 7 years and mom decided we’d start a new Gotcha Day tradition. Today will be the day they make their donation to the SPCA. The SPCA took me in, cared for me, and kept me safe for several months while I was waiting to be adopted, so it’s only fitting that today we recognize and support them and all their hard work.
Mom’s also going to the pet store that’s having a sale on food, so maybe she’ll get me a new toy. Meow, Mom, you know I like sparkle balls. Maybe the store has a color I don’t have.
