Unglamorous me update

My allergies started bothering me again and I’ve done some nibbling on my furs. It’s mostly limited to the inside of my left thigh, which you can you can see in this unglamorous photo. I’ve also nibbled a little spot from beneath my tail, but it’s not too bad.

Mom called the vet and he said it’s hard to know what’s causing my allergies to flare up.

Mom thinks I react to chicken and fish, so I’ve been eating food that doesn’t contain those ingredients. But since I eat a commercial cat food and not prescription there’s always the possibility that there’s some unlabeled chicken or fish in my food.

There could also be some allergen in the air that’s causing me problems.  Who knows!  Grrrr!

The vet said it was okay to give me some oral steroid again. It’s taken a long time to grow back my furs and I don’t want to feel that miserable again, or look like I did a year ago! I’ll never have all my tummy furs back, but we’re trying to keep all the furs on my legs and tail.

I’ve been on medications for 12 days and my nibbling has stopped. Mom is going to try giving the medication every other day, and check with the vet to get his recommendation on how to proceed. Steroids are not a good long-term solution, but it might be necessary to keep me from chewing my furs off.

For those of you who are experienced with steroids, Raven is getting 1/4 of a 5 mg prednisolone pill. I think that’s a fairly low dose but I’m going to try every other day and hope it keeps her allergies in check.

I’m purring that your flare up stays away, Raven!

  2. BZ Dogs says:

Poor Raven 🙁 Paws crossed that things get less itchy soon. 🙁

  3. Elise Xavier says:

My husband’s allergies have been flaring up as well and we find that sleeping in a room with the windows closed and an air purifier on for the night really helps. Maybe this system would help a bit for cat allergies too?

I’m so sorry you’ve got allergies – they are not fun at all to deal with for us humans, let alone you poor kitties who don’t have it as easy as “pop a Claritin.” I hope your allergies pass soon!

    • Raven says:

Actually, we’ve tried allergy medication. Benedryl (diphenhydramine) didn’t work well for Raven. We also tried Zyrtec (Cetirizine HCl) which is supposed to be a pretty good antihistamine for cats, but it didn’t work well enough either.

Raven’s Dad has allergies so we do have air filters. Funny thing….Raven’s Dad is allergic to cats! He gets allergy shots.

  4. We purr the lower dose will still help you Raven.
    Feeling itchy cannot be fun.

  5. 🙁 Poor Raven!

I know that some commercial food brand do have food for allergic cats. It’s no miracle formula, but they state what’s exactly inside the food. We assume you live in the US, so we can’t give you any brands, but maybe you could have a look?

  6. speedyrabbit says:

oh dear just when we thought you had gotten on top of that, hopefully it will settle down soon,xx

  7. We have Chuck on a low dose steroid (budesonide) for his intestinal issues, and the vet says he’s gonna stay on them forever! We’ve tried weaning him off, only to have unfortunate results…so back on he goes. Hope you feel better, Raven!

    • Raven says:

The good thing about budesonide is that it helps the digestive system without having a strong effect on the rest of the body. Hopefully it continues to keep Chuck’s intestinal issues in check.

  8. Allergy causes are tough things to pin down.

  9. Brian says:

We sure hope it clears up for you Raven. It might be something in your new litter.

    • Raven says:

This started before the new brand of litter. We can only hope that there was something in the last bag of the old stuff!

  10. You poor girl. We can’t remember if we asked you this before, or if we told you about this site: https://www.petwellbeing.com/c/cat-products/condition/allergies

You might find something helpful for you.

    • Raven says:

That site has many interesting products. But because Raven has a sensitive system, I limit her exposure to as much as I can (food, supplements, new furniture, outdoors). In general, I prefer to feed variety and give lots of mental stimulation with new things, but that tends to backfire for her.

  11. Feel better, pretty girl. Those allergies are frustrating! Hugs.

  12. Oh no, we’re sorry to read this ! We hope that a lower dose of pred still helps you. Purrs

  13. We’re sorry your allergies are bothering you again, Raven. We hope the medicine helps you and you can take a lesser dose.

  14. Mary McNeil says:

We hope you get better soon, Raven, but you are still beautiful !

  15. Now that you mention it, our bread picture does look like mouse bread too:)

  16. 15andmeowing says:

I am glad you are already feeling better. Have you tried the Royal Canin prescription food that is made with rabbit? Prancie used to do well on that, but she steals from the others so it is not worth it for her.

  17. Annie says:

I’m sorry you’re having a flare, Raven. I’m glad the medicine is helping and hopefully you can lessen your dose. I know of many kitties that take pred long term.

I didn’t know that commercial food doesn’t have to disclose if it has fish. That is concerning. Annie can’t have fish at all. I thought I could trust reading the ingredients.

    • Raven says:

The vet said it is not uncommon for foods to be “contaminated” with ingredients that are not on the label. I’m not sure if it’s only commercial foods,or if it tends to be the lower priced commercial foods. I would hope prescription diets have the highest level of quality control, but I don’t feed prescription food to Raven.

  18. Gattina says:

In the almost 60 years I had a cat I never had one who was allergic, except one, but that was my fault I hadn’t seen that she had got flees. As soon a the flees were gone she didn’t scratch herself anymore either. Sometimes it can be caused by stress or because of another cat. It’s really very complicated to find out what it is !

    • Raven says:

This is my first cat with allergies. My Golden Retriever had allergies, but they’re the poster dogs for allergies and skin issues so it wasn’t a surprise. After getting things under control with medication, we were able to manage his allergies with a special diet.

  19. Johnny says:

Get better little one. Sending you lots of love and cuddles! <3

  20. Jan K says:

Sorry your allergies are flaring up, Raven! Our dog Luke seems to have something similar going on, and we wonder if there isn’t something in the air this time of year causing it. We are trying to avoid the steroid route if we can, but we know they can be a great short term option so we do not rule it out. They once got us through a very tough time with our kitty Samantha, so we believe in them (not allergy related but something else).
    Keep feeling better!

    • Raven says:

From what I’ve read, Apoquel is another great option for dogs. We tried it for Raven (off label for cats) but it didn’t work for her.

  21. kittiesblue says:

Raven, we are so sorry to hear and see this. Has your vet ruled out stress? We have allergy cats among us who have licked off our furs and cats with stress issues do it. Whatever the reason turns out to be, we hope you get better really fast and grow those furs back before winter. 22. Poor baby! I’m sorry to hear your troubles are back! I hope you can figure something out and not have to be on the meds much longer. Sending pawsitive, non-itchy thoughts your way!

  23. DashKitten says:

This is frustrating for you. Is is seasonal do you know? I am glad you have medication to try and resolve the issues. Our Harvey is on kidney food (well when he will eat it *sigh*).

    Well well Raven OK?
